Funeral services for Frances Smith were held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter. Bishop Leverne McKenny officiated.

Public viewing was held on Sunday at the funeral home.

Frances "Scooter" Smith transitioned on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021, at her home in Sumter.

She was born in Surrency, Georgia, to the late Frank and Mattie Hammond. Frances attended Baxley Training School and was the wife of the late Joseph Smith. In 1961, she moved to Newark, New Jersey, where she worked at Lyons VA Hospital and retired in 1992. She attended Christian Pentecostal Church in Newark, until she relocated to Sumter.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Petrinia Smith; sisters, Annie M. Stafford, Ossie B. Anderson, Deotha Roby, Corine H. Johnson and Carrie B. Smith; and brothers, Vernon Putman, Leroy McPherson and William H. McPherson.

Survivors are her son, Joseph (Helen) Smith Jr. of Atlanta; four daughters, Debra Bell and Shirley Brown of Sumter and Greta Smith and Pamela Smith, both of Newark; brother, LeConyers McPherson of Washington, D.C.: 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.
