FTC Lady Gamecock Tip-Off Classic begins Friday at SHS

The inaugural FTC Lady Gamecock Tip-Off Classic will be held Friday, Saturday and Monday at the Sumter High School gymnasiums.

Including the Lady Gamecocks, Goose Creek, James Island, Dutch and Carolina Forest are ranked in the top 10 in the 5A preseason poll. North Myrtle Beach is in the top 10 in the 4A poll.

Zaxby's Tip-Off Classic begins Friday

The Zaxby's Tip-off Classic will be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Scott's Branch High School gymnasium in Sumter.

Five boys teams and 10 girls teams will compete in the tournament. The Wilson Hall girls and Scott's Branch girls along with the Scott's Branch boys will compete.

Vanderbilt AD voices support for Mason

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Vanderbilt athletic director Malcolm Turner says Derek Mason has his full support as the Commodores football coach and they'll be working together to give the football program the resources and support needed to succeed.Turner issued a statement Tuesday with Vanderbilt 2-8 in Mason's sixth season.

Mason currently is 26-46 and sixth on Vanderbilt's all-time wins list. He signed a contract extension after last season after coaching the Commodores to their second bowl during his tenure. Mason has yet to post a winning record at the Southeastern Conference's smallest and only private university.

Earnhardt Jr honorary starter for Daytona 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be the honorary starter for the 2020 Daytona 500, making him part of the pre-race ceremonies for the third consecutive year.

Earnhardt made the announcement on his podcast Monday, one day after the NASCAR Cup Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Earnhardt, a two-time Daytona 500 champion (2004, 2014) who retired at the end of the 2017 season, served as grand marshal in 2018 and drove the pace truck in February.

Track president Chip Wile joked "the only thing left for Dale now is for him to sing the national anthem prior to the Daytona 500."
