George Allen Hinnant Jr., 69, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2020, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital in Sumter.

Allen was born on July 17, 1951, in Kingstree, a son of the late George Allen Hinnant Sr. and Hazeline Harrington Hinnant. He was a 1969 graduate of Kingstree High School and a 1973 graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he also received his master's degree in 1995. Allen was former director of DSS in Williamsburg County and retired from the state office in Columbia in 2002. He was co-owner of Leonard's Music in Sumter until 2020. Allen attended Sumter First Church of the Nazarene. He was an avid musician, having played in several bands over the years including Lane General Store, El Dorado and Black Bottom Biscuits, among others. Allen was involved in Sumter Little Theatre, the Sumter Opera House, the Sumter Concert Band and, most recently, used his talents at First Church of the Nazarene in Sumter. He loved music and used it to connect with others by teaching and playing. Allen was a kind, gentle soul who loved children, especially his nieces and nephews.

Surviving Allen are his former wife and special friend, Jill Jiunnies of Sumter; his sisters, Lois (Charlie) Mitchum of Kingstree and Melissa (Walter) Woodard of Manning; nieces, Kim (Allen) Wilkes of Kingstree, Amy (Mike) Turner of Andrews, Rebecca (Cody) Tyler of Manning, Emily (Bryan) Ridgeway of Sumter and Marji (Robbie) Robinson of Summerton; a nephew, Steven Woodard of Manning; great-nieces, Hannah Wilkes, Trissy Turner, Charley Tyler, Darci Tyler, Addalyne Tyler and Ella Ridgeway; great-nephews, Brent Turner, Caleb Wilkes, RJ Robinson, Nolan Robinson and Kase Robinson.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. today at Sumter First Church of the Nazarene.
