GEORGE C. SUGG JR.

Posted

MYRTLE BEACH - George Coepender Sugg Jr., formerly of Pawleys Island, departed this life peacefully at 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2019, after a long illness.

George was born on Nov. 4, 1924, in Alcolu, a son of the late George Coepender Sugg Sr. and Zola Britton Sugg.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three of his daughters, Sheila S. Alexander, Margaret C. Sugg and Sheryl S. Babila; his sisters, Katherine S. Dickson and Mary S. Powell; and his brothers, Turner Bynum Sugg and William Britton Sugg.

After his graduation from Manning High School, George attended Clemson College, until his enlistment in the United States Army Air Corps in 1943. His military service included being promoted to sergeant and assigned to a B-26 marauder crew, sailing on the Queen Mary to Europe, flying 34 missions, and being promoted to staff sergeant. Awarded with an Air Medal and seven Oak Leaf Cluster military decorations and three Battle Stars, George was based in Holland and France, until the war ended when he was then stationed at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. After discharge in 1948, he joined the National Guard and was promoted to master sergeant. George was determined to be self-employed after his military service, and his businesses included being founder and president of Direct Factory Outlet Mobile Homes Inc. and Pender Land Holding Co. Inc. An entrepreneur, his later career involved being a real estate developer, investor and financier. When not doing business deals, he loved going to his ponds and was an avid fisherman. He also enjoyed cheering on his beloved Clemson Tigers football. Lastly, he received great fulfillment in helping others and often did so anonymously and privately countless times to those he knew well and often to those he did not know at all but would simply read about in the newspaper. In that spirit of generosity, the family requests that any donations be sent to one of George's favorite organizations, Tara Hall Home for Boys, P.O. Box 955, Georgetown, SC 29442.

George is survived by his wife of 44 years, Suzanne Goodwin Sugg of Myrtle Beach; his sister, Zola Sugg Clayton (Richard) of Williamston, North Carolina; and daughters, Pam S. Jennings of Atlanta, Gina S. Johnson of Myrtle Beach, Natalie S. Garrett (Mase) of Simpsonville and Elizabeth S. McNew (Scott) of Greenville.
