George Edward Johnson departed this life on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at his residence with his wife by his side.

He was born on Feb. 9, 1942, in Sumter, a son of the late Edmond and Edith English Johnson. George attended the public schools of Sumter. After graduating high school, George enrolled in the United States Marine Corps, where he held the rank of lance corporal and served in the Vietnam War. George was honorably discharged from the USMC and served two years in the Reserves. George decided to begin his new life as a civilian in Brooklyn, New York. While living in Brooklyn, George met and married Sherry L. Powell of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. George and Sherry brought forth their eldest daughter, Sherry N. Johnson; three years later, Tamara L. Johnson was born; and four years later, the youngest daughter, Syreeta C. Johnson arrived. The Johnson family resided in Jamaica Queens, New York, where George was employed with the United States Postal Service. When he retired from the Postal Service, he moved his family back to his original home, Sumter. George was a loving son, father, brother, uncle and friend to everyone.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories: his wife, Sherry Johnson; daughters, Sherry, Tamara and Syreeta; two grandsons, Tyrique Jones and Dakarie Francillon; his sisters, Iburia S. Johnson of Pittsburgh, Loretta (Raymond) Rogers and Mildred (Michael) Slater, both of Sumter, and Cynthia (Alonzo) Snipes of San Antonio, Texas; a brother, Kevin L. Johnson of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a sister, Betsy Johnson; and brothers, James and Curtis Johnson.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Mr. Johnson will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. on Thursday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem Ave., Sumter, SC 29150 with the Rev. Dr. Cartrell Woods Officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. at the home, 190 Planters Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.
