GEORGE HILL

Brother George Hill, husband of Elizabeth Witherspoon Hill, was born on Feb. 11, 1945, in Sumter, to the late Henry and Bertha Slater Hill. He departed this earthly life on Friday, June 28, 2019, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, surrounded by loved ones.

Brother Hill was educated in Sumter County and graduated from Manchester School. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a lifelong member of Enon Missionary Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the usher ministry, jubilee choir, male chorus and was a very devoted servant of the trustee ministry, where he was given the honorary status of trustee emeritus. He had an outstanding reputation as being a dedicated usher. Not only was he faithful to Enon but also to the Sumter Baptist E&M Association Usher Ministry. He was a self-employed entrepreneur, an agriculturalist and poultry farmer.

Brother Hill's memory will be cherished and lived on through his wife, Elizabeth Witherspoon Hill; two daughters, Gloria Jean (retired Col. Gregory) Hopkins and Nyetta Hill-Lewis, both of Sumter; four grandchildren, Sinclair (Artreze) Burgess, Gabrielle and Selena Hopkins and Michael Lewis, all of Sumter; a great-grandchild, Akiya Burgess of Sumter; six sisters, Edith Mae Hill of Sumter, Mary Lou (Randolph) Harvin of Wedgefield, Shirley (Carl) Greene, Jessie Benjamin, Carolyn Hill and Roberta (Gregory) Sharper, all of Sumter; one brother, Leroy Hill of Sumter; two sisters-in-law, Elizann Witherspoon of Paxville and Barbie Pugh of Sumter; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by a sister, Rosa Lee Hill; brothers-in-law, Curtis Benjamin, David Witherspoon Sr., Samuel Witherspoon Sr., London and Thomas Witherspoon; and his loving son-in-law, Michael Lewis.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Brother Hill will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. on Wednesday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Enon Missionary Baptist Church, 2990 Pinewood Road, SC 29154 with Pastor Julie Ann Hayes, eulogist, and the Rev. Rossi Ramsey officiating.

Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 2112 Nettles Road, Sumter, SC 29154.
