MANNING - Gwendolyn Lucille Windham Singleton, 87, widow of Charles Vernon Singleton, formerly of Manning, died peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2019, surrounded by her family and her beloved pets.

Born on Oct. 31, 1932, in Sumter, she was a daughter of the late Roy and Irene Hodge Windham. She spent her career first with the American Red Cross, later as clerk to Clarendon County Council and then as assistant to the Clarendon County Administrator. She believed her very best years came later working as assistant to Clarendon County Sheriff Horace Swilley and then Sheriff Randy Garrett. She worked in that capacity until she retired to care for her husband. Her home cooking, her notorious house parties, her warm welcoming way, her love of shopping and showing out, will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her daughter, Paula Singleton Jordan (James) of Hartsville; a granddaughter, Jessica Elizabeth Maxwell of Manning; two great-grandsons, Nolan and Jordan Boone of Columbia; a sister, Susan Faircloth of Georgia; and her constant canine companions, Fuzz Bucket, Choca and her two special kitties.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby Windham.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in the chapel of Stephens Funeral Home with the Rev. Eugene Mosier officiating.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10 to 11 a.m. at Stephens Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crescent Hospice, 1370 Browning Road, Suite 120, Columbia, SC 29210.
