GWENDOLYN WEAVER JEFFERSON

LYNCHBURG - Gwendolyn Weaver Jefferson, 77, transitioned on Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2022.

She was a daughter of the late Walter Sr. and Gertrude Weaver and widow of the Honorable Mayor Clifton Jefferson Sr. Her first husband, Frank Lowery, also preceded her in death.

Gwendolyn was a 1962 graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, and she earned an associate degree from Florence Darlington Technical College. She served faithfully in Warren Chapel United Methodist Church as a lay speaker, youth advisor, church school superintendent, administrative council chairperson, choir member and and with the United Methodist Women. She embodied the true definition of United Methodism, always aiming for all things to be in "decency and in order."

Mrs. Jefferson served four years on Lynchburg Town Council and helped establish the first Magnolia Festival. She did whatever she could and gave advice to help further the progress of the town. She was a member of the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women and Queen of Lynchburg 247 Order of the Eastern Star.

From 1998 until her death, she was the owner of Jefferson Funeral Home Service Inc.

Survivors include her children, Karen Lowery, Clifton Lamont (Carla) Jefferson Jr. and Letitia Jefferson; two grandchildren, Camryn Jefferson and Mark Goble; four stepchildren, Carolyn Drayton, Chrichinda Davis, Calvin (Rachel) Henry and Tina Green; two nieces, Pearlie Weaver-Robinson and Selena Weaver; a grandnephew, Daryl Robinson Jr.; and a host of other family members and friends.

Her homegoing service will be held at noon on Wednesday at New Haven United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Sansbury Cemetery, directed by Jefferson Funeral Home Service Inc.
