HENRY OTIS POLLARD

Henry Otis Pollard, 83, beloved husband of Loretta Warley Pollard, died on Sunday, July 19, 2020, at St. George Healthcare, St. George.

He was born on Dec. 18, 1936, in Opelika, Alabama, a son of the late Otis and Louise Rudd Pollard. After graduating from Darden High School in Opelika, he moved moved to the Bronx to live with his mother and stepfather.

Henry took the military entrance exam and scored so high that he could enter any branch, but chose to become a Marine and was proud to be a Marine. In the Marine Corps, he took courses, disciplined himself and worked hard to become a certified aerospace mechanic. He met and married Loretta in 1961 and the two moved to Brooklyn, New York. This union was blessed with three sons. For many years, Henry used the skills he learned as a Marine to work in the aerospace industry. At Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage, Long Island, Henry worked on the electrical systems of military planes like the F-14 Tomcat and E2C Hawkeye. He also worked at Fairchild Republic, which made fighter planes for the military. After taking early retirement from Grumman Aerospace, Henry found work where his skills were needed at Lockheed Martin, an aerospace company in Jacksonville, Florida. After working at Lockheed, Henry was given the opportunity to become a corrections officer at the new Turbeville Correctional Institution in Turbeville and then moved to Summerton. Henry was a member of Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, Summerton. He loved all sports and was an avid fan of the New York Giants. He also loved to bake.

Henry is survived by his wife of 58 years of Summerton; three children, Mark, Wayne and Michael Pollard, who all live in the North; three grandchildren, Tyla, Elizabeth and Gabriella Pollard; two sisters, Thelma Louise Pollard (Mordecai) Johnson and Dorothy Jean Gist of Alabama; sister-in-law, Kathleen (the Rev. Leroy) McElveen of Summerton; a dutiful niece, Geri Kemp; loving nieces, Linda Lockhart and Janet Jackson of Alabama; nephew, Larry Mitchell of Alabama; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

Graveside services for Mr. Pollard will be held at noon Saturday at Historic Liberty Hill AME Church, 2310 Liberty Hill Road, Summerton, with the Rev. Archie Temoney, pastor.

Due to COVID-19, the family is not accepting visitors.

These services have been entrusted to Samuels Funeral Home LLC of Manning.
