Funeral services for Herbert Sanders will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church, 155 Wall St., Sumter, with the Rev. Larry C. Weston, pastor, and the Rev. Willie Dennis as eulogist.

The public may view from 1 to 7 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Interment is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Road, Columbia.

Herbert Sanders, 85, transitioned on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018, at the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia.

Born in Rembert, he was a son of the late Hayes Sanders Jr. and Mettie Dais Sanders. Herbert was a graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1952. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served honorably until his discharge in 1955. Afterwards, he moved to New York, where he was first employed at Northport VA Hospital in Long Island and, in later years, the New York Transit Authority, where he attained the position of night superintendent of the NYC Subway System and remained there for more than 37 years. He was married to Lucille Owens-Sanders. After retirement, they moved to South Carolina. They were the co-owners of two businesses, the Shantel's B&B Inn in Sumter and the Sander's Caf "N" Catering in Rembert. In his spare time, he enjoyed farming, traveling, cruising and just seeing and experiencing the good life.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Christopher D. Thompson.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Owens-Sanders of the home; a daughter, Leslie Curry of Baldwin, New York; two sons, Mark Sanders of Bronx, New York, and Gerard Sanders of Los Angeles, California; seven grandchildren, Cortney, Jordan, Christian, Arriana, Malaysia, Shantel and Veronica (Christopher) Rush; one great-grandson, Jayce Spriggs; two sisters, Alma Sanders Roman of Pomona, New York, and Dr. Virginia (Julian Jr.) Brown of Sumter; sister-in-law, Johnnie Womack of Fairmont, West Virginia; and a host of other relatives and dear friends.
