Graveside funeral services for Herbert Walter James will be held at 4 p.m. today at Wayman Chapel AME Church Cemetery with the pastor, the Rev. Robert L. China Jr., officiating.

Herbert Walter James, husband of the late Carrie Lang James, transitioned on Friday, June 18, 2021, at National HealthCare in Sumter.

Born in Sumter County, he was the youngest of seven children born to the late Wesley James and Victoria Pinckney James Coleman. He was a graduate of St. Michael High School Class of 1954. He was first employed at the Shaw Air Force Base Golf Course and later began his career as a purchasing agent at the Shaw AFB Officers Club. He traveled nationwide to club leadership development conferences to enhance his performance in advanced club management, where he retired after 42 years of service. He was also employed for seven years at FJ DeLaine Elementary School, until his second retirement. He was a lifelong member of Wayman Chapel AME Church, where he served in many capacities including president of the senior usher board, a member of the benevolence club, trustee board, steward board emeritis, choralairs choir, men's chorus, Sons of Allen and the finance committee. Active in the Wedgefield community, he served as a Boy Scout leader, mentored youth, was a founding member and president of DreamLand Social Club, and a member of Catchall Masonic Lodge 425 with more than 42 years of service.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Ruben James; two brothers, Robert James Sr. and Marion James Sr.; and four sisters, Ella Mae J. Walker, Victoria J. Taylor, Earline J. Prioleau and Lessie Mae James.

Surviving are his daughter, Pamela (Tracy) Brooks of Bristow, Virginia; a granddaughter, Jamie l. "Chiymyra" Howard of Ashburn, Virginia; a grandson, Myles D. Brooks of Bristow; and a host of other relatives and friends.
