FROM STAFF REPORTS

Brewington Presbyterian Church, on North Brewington Road in the Brewington community of Clarendon County, will celebrate its homecoming at 11 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.

The oldest church still standing on its original site was organized in 1811 by five members and 23 slaves. It withstood the Civil War and was spared from being burned down by Union troops who came through the area, according to historical records.

The church was operational until 1951, when it was dissolved because of decline in membership and the death of its pastor, the late Rev. Chester M. Campbell, according to historical records.

The land on which the church stands was donated by James Evans, great-great-grandfather of Tommy Evans, one of the leaders of the church's restoration efforts.

By 2011, the building's foundation began to deteriorate. Evans said it was important to him to keep the historical building alive, so the Brewington Cemetery Association, made up of descendants, was formed to preserve the church building and maintain the cemetery.
