J. Earl Vaughn, Ed.D, age 81, beloved husband of DeLores James Vaughn, died on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at his residence.

Born in Sumter, he was a son of the late Clarence and Annie Maple Vaughn. Dr. Vaughn served with the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1554 and later went on to teach at St. Paul School in 1957; Lincoln High School from 1958 to 1968; Lincoln High School as the principal from 1968 to 1973, which was renamed as Sumter High School; and then worked with School District 17 administration as director from 1974 to 1983 and assistant superintendent from 1983 to 1991. He was a member of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, Westside Community Neighborhood Association, Goodfellows Club of Sumter, Shepherd Center of Sumter and the Sumter County Democratic Party. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and educator.

Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Dr. Gregory J. Vaughn of Atlanta; a daughter, Barbara J. White and her husband, Johnny, of Rimini; two sisters, Joyce V. Cummings and Mary G. Platt; one granddaughter, Staci L. Johnson; two nieces, Angela Harrison and Quanda Singleton; two nephews, Sean Cummings and Brandon Harrison; two love sisters, Lucille Battle and Julia Benjamin; brother-in-law, Booker T. James and his wife, Rubye; and numerous cousins, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Baby Josephine Vaughn and Celestine V. Watson; stepmother, Gertrude Vaughn; two uncles, Silas Vaughn and Preston Vaughn; and seven aunts, Louella Maple Vaughn, Viola M. Johnson, Mary Jane M. Rembert, Maggie M. Brunson, Minnie M. Gilbert, Georgia M. Gilbert and Martha Maple.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel.

Honorary pallbearers will be the Goodfellows Club and the Touchdown Club.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home.

A private entombment will be held at Evergreen Memorial Park.
