James Frank Magee, age 79, went to his heavenly home on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Born on Dec. 21, 1939, at Underwood Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, New Jersey, he was the third of four children born to the late Dora Marguerite Zane Magee and John Carville Magee Sr. Mr. Magee grew up in Woodbury. His first job was working in his father's garage. He graduated from Woodbury High School in 1958. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky, in 1966 and served as president of the alumni board. Upon graduation, Mr. Magee worked as Christian education director at First United Methodist Church, Florence, Alabama. While there, he was president of the adult fellowship of the North Alabama Conference of the United Methodist Church. He then moved to Sumter and was education director and business manager at Trinity United Methodist Church and then went on to become the director of the John K. Crosswell Home for Children for 23 years. He also served as past president of the Sumter County Interagency Council and past president of Sumter County Drug and Alcohol Commission. Mr. Magee was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for more than 50 years.

Mr. Magee is survived by three daughters, Denise Magee Carraway and her husband, Carl, of Lugoff, Tara Magee Brannon and husband, Rusty, of Sumter and Kristin Elizabeth Magee Gay and her husband, Paul, of Dalzell; two brothers, John Carville Magee Jr. of New Jersey and Robert "Bob" Soloway Magee and his wife, Mary Ann, of Maryland; five grandchildren, Dora-Ann Gay Thomas, James Carraway, Karin Brannon, Madison Gay and Ethan Brannon; one great-grandchild, Zoey-Marie Thomas; his former wife, Barbara Ann Green Magee; his special friend, Jim Wade; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Magee was preceded in death by his brother, Theodore Zane Magee; and his sister-in-law, Joan H. Magee.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Bullock Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Angela Halter Marshall and Joseph James officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bullock Funeral Home and other times at the home of Tara and Rusty Brannon.
