JERRY WOOD

Posted

Jerry Sylvester Wood was born on July 7, 1945, in Kingstree. He passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, after a long illness. He spent his early years growing up in Columbia and Manning. He spent much of his childhood and teen years at his grandmother's farm in Manning. As he was small in stature and enjoyed riding horses, it was inevitable he would become a jockey. He started his riding career with trainer Mackie Prickett in New England and rode for close to 20 years, winning more than 1,400 races in his career. He spent a majority of his life living in New England. He moved back to Manning in 2000. He enjoyed learning about carpentry and woodworking. He was also a very accomplished guitar and dobro player and was in many bands in Massachusetts and South Carolina. He loved any kind of music and spending time with friends. He also loved to fish and be on the water. That was his happy place.

He is survived by his wife, Sherry (Mickle); two granddaughters, Alyssa Schaffhauser and Ashley Schaffhauser; and three great-grandchildren. He is predeceased by his daughter, Danette Schaffhauser, and brother, Alfred Wood.

There will be a celebration of life at a later date. Any donations in his name can be made to Windy Ridge Rescue, 6105 Catchall Road, Dalzell, SC 29040, or through Paypal on its website, www.windyridgerescue.org.www.windyridgerescue.org
