John Carter Jr., 77, was born on Dec. 17, 1942, in Sumter County, a son of the late John Carter Sr. and Sugar Queen Dicks Carter. John departed this earthly life on Friday, May 8, 2020, after a short illness at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital, Sumter.

He received his education in the Sumter County School District. John was employed by Lafayette Villa for 25 years in the maintenance department and later he was employed by Sumter School District for 10 years. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved working in his garden every year. John was a lifelong member of St. James United Methodist Church and, at an early age, he gave his life to Christ. He loved the Lord and his church. He was a faithful member of the United Methodist Men.

John leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Gloria Glasscho Carter; two sons, John Earl Carter of Miami, Florida, and Bryan (Toya) Carter Sr. of College Park, Georgia; one daughter, Barbara Carter of Rock Hill; three grandchildren; three brothers, Prince (Viola) Carter, Henry Carter and James Carter, all of Sumter; two sisters, Rosanna C. Nelson and Dorothy C. Cabbagestalk, both of Sumter; six brothers-in-law; five sisters-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family is receiving relatives at the home, 650 Rainbow Drive, Sumter.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Dicks Cemetery, Dicks Street, Sumter, with the Rev. Cheryl G. Johnson, pastor of St. James United Methodist Church, officiating, eulogist.

The procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home.
