JOHN CLARK KARNES

John Clark Karnes, age 95, beloved husband of 65 years to Joan Rose Dragone Karnes, died on Thursday, May 14, 2020, at his residence in Sumter.

Born in Flushing, New York, he was a son of the late John Karnes and Jeanette Doremus Karnes. John served for four years in the United States Navy during World War II. After his service in the Navy, he attended St. Johns University and then graduated with a bachelor's degree in business from Arkansas State University. Following his graduation from college, John worked briefly in the insurance industry while he applied to and tested for entrance into the police academy. He was accepted to the academy and became an officer with the New York City Police Department. John served with the NYCPD for more than 22 years, retiring in 1976 as a sergeant. He and his wife, Joan, relocated to Sumter in 1981 to live out their retirement years. John was an avid golfer and played as much as he was able. He will be remembered as a very loving husband, uncle and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by two nephews, Mark Karnes of Maryland and Steven Karnes of New Jersey; a niece, Joanne Dash; a great-nephew, Joseph Dash; and two great-nieces, Lauren Dash and Elizabeth Dash, all originally of New York.

In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by a brother, Peter Karnes, and a nephew, Peter Karnes.
