John "Johnnie" McDonald Jr., 74, was born Aug. 20, 1945, in Sumter, to the late John Sr. and Nancy McDonald. John departed this life on Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019, after a brief illness, surrounded by family and friends at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

He received his diploma from St. Jude High School, Sumter, and earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Morris College. He was employed by Sumter Developmental Learning Center as a career / life skills counselor; later as an electrical journeyman; and, at the end of his career, he was self-employed. During his lifetime, he was a member of the Easy Riders Motorcycle Club, a member of Shriner Cairo Visitation 2_6, St. Jude Alumni Association and a member of the Knights of St. Peter Claver. As a lifetime member of St. Jude Catholic Church, he was always there to greet members of the church.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his only wife, the former Vernessa P. McDonald; two sons, Barry Harvin of Laredo, Texas, and James Pack of Sumter; a daughter, Danita (Richard) Russell of Sumter; three grandchildren, Shaquandria "Jazmin" Pack, Richard Russell Jr. and David Russell, all of Sumter; a sister, Sallie (Andrew) Hurley of Banning, California; a nephew, Andrew (Julie) Hurley of Whittier, California; two nieces, Adrienne Hurley of Carson, California, and Alissa (Sekou) Billings of Yorktown, Virginia; one grandnephew, Sekou Billings Jr.; and two grandnieces, Mackenzie Billings and Elizabeth Hurley.

In addition to his parents, Johnnie was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Vaughn.

Public viewing will be held from 2 to 6 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.

Mr. McDonald will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at St. Jude Catholic Church, 611 W. Oakland Ave., Sumter, SC 29150 with the Rev. Ruffino C. Madridejos Jr. CRM, officaiting.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, 71 Hallmark Lane, Sumter, SC 29153.

Job's Mortuary Inc., 312 S. Main St., Sumter, is in charge of arrangements.
