Retired Lt. Col. Joseph "Joe" Frederick Kuhlmann Jr., age 84, beloved husband of 57 years to Janet Kuhlmann, died on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018, at his residence.

Born on Oct. 20, 1934, in Ellenville, New York, to the late Joseph Frederick Kuhlmann and Margaret Ward Kuhlmann and raised in Manchester, Connecticut. Joe retired from the United States Air Force as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of loyal service. He earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses while serving as a pilot in Cuba and Vietnam. He was awarded the Bronze Star and 11 Air Medals for his service in Vietnam. He also served as an instructor pilot. Joe was the owner of Kuhlmann and Associates Real Estate and Appraisals. He loved teaching appraisal courses. Joe was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Surviving in addition to his wife Janet are three sons, Joey Kuhlmann and his wife, Tina, of Summerville and their children, Jaeger and Molly; David Kuhlmann and his wife, Mary Margaret, of Long Beach, Mississippi, and their children, Samantha, Michael and Charlie; and Mark Kuhlmann and his wife, Jen Jenkins, of Savannah, Georgia, and their son, Ison; a nephew that Joe thought of as a son, Ross Berry and his wife, Julie, of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and their children, Alyson, Rachel and Symantha; one brother, Bill Kuhlmann of Gainesville, Virginia; one sister, Kitty Ansaldi of Manchester; and two beloved dogs, Mac and Robbie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Kuhlmann.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Nick Cheek officiating.

The family will receive friends following the service.
