Graveside services for Katie G. Brown will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Orangehill Independent Methodist Church, 3005 S. Kings Highway, Wedgefield, with the Rev. Darryl James officiating.

The public may view from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, 304 S. Main St., Sumter.

Mrs. Katie was born in Wedgefield and was one of eight children born to the late Marion Gayle Sr. and Rosa Lee Colclough Gayle. She transitioned on Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, at her residence in Sumter. She was the wife of the late James Brown.

Mrs. Katie received her education in the public schools of Sumter County. She was a lifelong member of Orangehill RMUE Church in Wedgefield. In the early 1950s, she moved to Manhattan, New York, where she resided for many years and was employed as a laundress. After returning to South Carolina, she was employed at Shaw Air Force Base. Mrs. Katie was known among her family and friends as a tough disciplinarian, and she was loved and appreciated by them all.

In addition to her parents and late husband, James, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruth Lewis; two grandsons, Richard Lewis and Andre' Lewis; and seven siblings, William "Gippy" Gayle, Marion Gayle Jr., William Gayle, Birdie Ray, Sarah Byrd, Martha Clark and Eliza Ball.

Survivors are her son, Charles (Susan) Gayle of Sumter; eight grandchildren, Marian, Jacqueline, Marthenia, LaShonda, Jermie, Christopher, Andre and Taylor; nine great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Jasmine, Jalyn, Nakia, Morgan, Sydni, Miles, Sydney and Jeremiah; and a host of other relatives and friends.
