Retired Master Gunnery Sgt. Lawrence Vaughn, 70, was born on April 28, 1950, in Sumter County, a son of the late John Arthur Vaughn and Rosa Vaughn Gaymon. He departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2021.

Lawrence was educated in the public schools of Sumter County, where he excelled in in many sports, including football where he received the nickname "Tank Vaughn." He was a 1968 graduate of Lincoln High School. Upon graduating high school, he went on to serve 28 years and eight months in the United States Marine Corps. He was a dedicated member of New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, the Sumterites and Lincoln High School Preservation Alumni Association.

Left to cherish his fond memories are five children, Terry Vaughn, Lakeitha Vaughn, Tammy Jennings, Victoria Gamble and LaToya Moses; and 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie Wright officiating.

The funeral procession will leave at 9:20 a.m. from the home.

Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, Columbia.

A public viewing will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. today at Williams Funeral Home. Masks and social distancing required.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, funeral services will be limited to family, close friends and program participants.

The family is requesting no visitation at the home.
