Lee County School District celebrates School Board Recognition Month

Lee County School District joins school districts throughout the state and nation to celebrate School Board Recognition Month in January. More than 600 locally elected and appointed school board members throughout the state will be recognized by schools and communities for their service and dedication to public education. The theme "Local Voice, People's Choice" highlights the fact that school board members are elected/appointed by the people in their local communities to represent their voice and to ensure the success of schools and students.

"Our school board members demonstrate their commitment to our district and community on a daily basis," LCSD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Andrews said. "We greatly appreciate their support, presence and leadership."

In LCSD, school board members develop policies and make tough decisions on complex educational and social issues impacting the entire community. They bear responsibility for an annual budget of more than $15 million, nearly 2,000 students, hundreds of employees and a substantial physical plant.

As a part of School Board Recognition Month, LCSD board members participated in an official signing of the South Carolina School Board Member Ethical Principles during their January school board meeting. By signing the principles, school board members publicly vowed to uphold effective governance principles and pledged to improve public education in their community.

Several board members have completed board training through The South Carolina School Boards Association and The South Carolina School Boards Insurance Trust, even serving as officers and delegates in each of the organizations. The leadership training and experience of the board have resulted in the district realizing increases in fiscal and scholastic capacity.

For the month of January, the district and its schools will boast the photos of the board and host a member at each location in order to better demonstrate their appreciation. At the month's regularly scheduled meeting on Thursday, Jan. 24, students from each school will pay tribute to the board in some form of artistic expression.

The men and women serving LCSD are: Chairwoman Sanya Mose; vice chairwoman Sylvia Scott; secretary Queenie M. Boyd; and Dottie Baker, Nathaniel Brunson, Regitt James and Johnny McDuffie.
