Another name has emerged in the race for the South Carolina House of Representatives District 50 special election. Keishan Scott is running as a Democrat, making him the third person to file for the currently vacant District 50 seat.

Scott was born and raised in Lee County, where he currently serves and has served for two years on Bishopville City Council. Scott also works as a paralegal in Sumter.

“It gives me great joy to have this opportunity to serve in an even greater way now,” Scott said.

Scott is a board member for the Lee County Council on Aging, the third vice president for the Lee County branch of the NAACP, secretary of the Lee County Democratic Party and a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Concerned Clergy of Lee County and the Lee County MLK Committee.

“Being a servant of the people that I’ve been called to serve is one of the greatest things that has ever taken place in my life, and being a community leader, being rooted and grounded in the community, I believe that that has helped to prepare me to serve District 50 in a greater way.”

Scott said there are four key priorities of his campaign: access to health care, workforce empowerment, quality education and expanding infrastructure/economic development.

“If there’s anything I want the people to know, I would say this: This campaign is about the people, it’s for the people, and it’s about the people.”

Scott is now one of two Democrats running for the seat, the other being Carl Whetsel.

The primary election is set to take place on April 1, with early voting taking place March 17-March 28, not including weekends.
