Leroy Thompson Sr., 93, was born Nov. 14, 1918, in the Sandhills community of Pinewood, to the late Arthur and Susan Galishaw Thompson. He departed this life on Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at Tuomey Regional Medical Center.

He was a lifelong and faithful member of Mt. Pisgah AME Church, where he served in many capacities throughout his life including trustee board, steward board and as a member of the adult Sunday school. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School Class of 1939 and he received a bachelor of science degree from Morris College. He worked as a cook at Frank’s Restaurant for 22 years and was the owner/operator of Thompson’s Grocery for 25 years.

He leaves to cherish precious memories: his loving and devoted wife of 66 years, the Rev. Emma Washington Thompson of the home; one son, Leroy A. (Mozell S.) Thompson Jr. of Sumter; one daughter, Debra T. (Harold E.) Givens; one grandson, Jaron DeAndre Givens, all of Charlotte, N.C.; one brother, Arthur (Gladys) Thompson of Philadelphia, Pa.; two sisters-in-law, Mary T. Thompson of Sumter and Alice Thompson of New York City, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Donald O’Neil Thompson; two brothers, Charles I. Thompson and John Thompson; and three sisters, Susan T. Mitchell, Dorcus Thompson and Willie R. Jenkins.

Mr. Thompson will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. today for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Mt. Pisgah AME Church, 217 W. Bartlette St., Sumter, with the Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark officiating, assisted by the Rev. Roteshia Hamilton and the Rev. Dr. Gloria Williams. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Park.

The family is receiving friends at 17 Jenkins St., Sumter.
