Opinion: Leaders of United Methodist church should move forward with Wesley's doctrine

In light of the recent article in The Sumter Item about the United Methodist Church, I would like to offer two quotes from John Wesley (1703-1791), the primary leader of the societies that eventually became known as Methodists.

1. "I am not afraid that the people called Methodists should ever cease to exist either in Europe or America. But I am afraid lest they should only exist as a dead sect, having the form of religion without the power. And this undoubtedly will be the case unless they hold fast both the doctrine, spirit and discipline with which they first set out." - John Wesley

2. "Making an open stand against all the ungodliness and unrighteousness which overspreads our land as a flood is one of the noblest ways of confessing Christ in the face of His enemies." - John Wesley

Further studies of John Wesley and his societies can help people to know "the doctrine, spirit and discipline with which they first set out" as quoted above. May the leaders of this group today move forward with the same concern, doctrine and zeal held by Wesley.
