Laurence Manning assistant headmaster given top job

MANNING - A familiar face at Laurence Manning will become the school's next headmaster.

Late last year, the LMA Board of Directors announced Headmaster Dr. Spencer A. Jordan would be stepping down to take the executive director position with the South Carolina Independent Schools Association.

Less than a month later, the board announced Robert "Tripp" N. Boykin III would become the school's next headmaster, effective June 1.

Boykin has served in various capacities at LMA for the past 14 years. He has worked his way up from faculty member to director of communications and technology to Upper School principal and, now, the school's assistant headmaster.

"I am so honored and humbled to be chosen by the LMA board to succeed my dear friend and mentor, Dr. Spencer Jordan, and to have this opportunity to lead our school in the coming year," said Boykin. "I'm proud to have been a Swampcat for nearly half of my life as a student, faculty member, and administrator, so  this is quite exciting. More exciting is that I have the privilege of continuing to work with our dynamic and invested faculty and staff as we continue to innovate our programs to best educate and grow the whole student. I am truly looking forward to continuing to serve our school and  the Clarendon and Sumter communities."

"Words cannot express how proud I am with the Board of Director's decision to select Mr. Tripp Boykin as our next headmaster here at LMA," Jordan said Wednesday. "Over the past 14 years, Mr. Boykin has been one of the finest examples of a Christian educator that I have ever known."

Jordan said Boykin's "dedication and commitment" to LMA and its students has been instrumental in the growth and sustained academic success the school has maintained.

"Mr. Boykin's love for all of our students as well as his desire to make sure that every student reaches their full potential illustrates the heart that he has for young people," Jordan said. "There is no doubt in my mind that Laurence Manning is in great hands with Mr. Boykin guiding its path."

Jordan thanked Boykin for being a true friend and confidant throughout their years working together.

"I owe Tripp so much," Jordan said. "Not just for the loyalty and trust he has provided, but for his steadfast commitment to our friendship and our great school. My prayer moving forward is that the Lord will bless Laurence Manning under the leadership of Mr. Boykin. I know that with him at the helm, the future of our beloved school will continue to shine brightly well into this new millennium."

Boykin, who lives in Alcolu with his wife, Shannon, graduated from Erskine College in 1992 with a Bachelor's Degree in English, and he currently serves on his alma mater's Alumni Board of Directors. He also graduated from The Citadel Graduate College with a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership with Distinction. Boykin currently serves as lead evaluator for SCISA AdvancEd accreditation. He has also earned numerous awards including the prestigious 2017 SCISA Charles Beach Volunteer of the Year Award.

Founded in 1972, LMA is a Christ-centered liberal arts school established on the commitment to providing students in grades K-3 through 12th with a high-quality education.
