Funeral services for Loretta Salome Alexander Lewis will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday at St. Luke AME Church, 2355 N. St. Paul Church Road, Sumter, with the Rev. George Brown officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The public may view from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Palmer Memorial Chapel, Sumter.

Mrs. Lewis will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. on Saturday for further viewing until the hour of service.

Loretta transitioned on Saturday, April 6, 2019, at NHC HealthCare in Sumter.

Born in Mayesville, she was the seventh of eight children born to the late Sylvia Elizabeth Witherspoon Alexander and State Alexander. She was also the widow of John Phillip Lewis. Loretta, in former years, attended and graduated from Mayesville Institute, Mayesville. Upon graduation, she attended and graduated from Morris College in Sumter. She relocated to Brooklyn, New York, and began a career in cosmetology. Later, she was employed by the New York City Board of Education Division of Special Education, until she retired in May of 1984. Loretta and John relocated to Sumter after retirement. They reaffiliated with St. Luke AME Church and were faithful members.

Loretta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; and six siblings, Robert Isaac, Susan Virginia, Carl, Julia Viola, State and John; and a loving cousin and caregiver, Samuel James Pringle of Sumter.

Survivors include one sister, Gladys Bates of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude and thanks to her nieces, Loretta Bates of Upper Marlboro and Barbara Stuckey of Sumter.
