MAGGIE MARIE WARD

Maggie Marie Hunter Spencer Ward, caring wife of John Ward Jr., was born Feb. 19, 1946, in Sumter County and was the daughter of the late Harry and Annette E. Hunter Spencer. She transitioned peacefully to her eternal home on May 29, 2019, at her earthly home.

She graduated from Ebenezer High School in 1963, where she held the title of Miss Sophomore, and Bethune Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Florida, in 1968. Maggie Marie went on to further her education at Hunter College in New York earning her Master of Social Work degree in 1982.

Maggie Marie began her spiritual journey at High Hills Baptist Church and was baptized at an early age. After relocating to New York City, she joined St. Luke Baptist Church, Harlem, New York, under the leadership of Pastor Walter L. Harding. Upon returning to South Carolina, she reconnected herself with the High Hills Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of the Rev. Donald Amis.

Maggie Marie was employed by the City of New York Department of Homeless Services/Child Welfare from where she retired after 41 years of dedicated, diligent service. Additionally, Maggie Marie just recently retired from her post as President of Seniors Helping Seniors in 2017.

Maggie Marie leaves to cherish her fond memories a loving and devoted husband, John Ward Jr., of the home; her sweet daughter Princess Shanteen V. (Lazaro) Ward-Morales of Hampton, Virginia; her beloved son, Prince Stefon J. (Gloria) Ward of Atlanta, Georgia; her dedicated god-sister, Lisi L. (Arnold) Platt of Herndon, Virginia; three aunts: Minnie B. Long of Jacksonville, Florida, Catherine (Lewis) Stephens of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Nellie Baldwin of Sumter; one nephew, Nigel G. Spencer Jr. of New York, New York; two god-sons, Justin Platt of Herndon, Virginia, and Darryl Gathers; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; two life-long friends and neighbors, Gardenia (the Rev. Willie) Dennis and Dorothy (Willie) Owens; and a host of extended daughters and sons, nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Nigel G. Spencer.

Public Viewing will be held on Monday from 2 to 6 p.m. at Job's Mortuary.

Mrs. Ward will be placed in the church on Tuesday at noon for viewing until the hour of service.

Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at High Hills Missionary Baptist Church, 6750 Meeting House Road, Dalzell, SC 29040, with Pastor Donald Amis, Officiating, and the Rev. Willie Wright, Eulogist.

Interment will follow in High Hills Church Cemetery.

Family will receive friends at the home, 1620 N. Kings Highway, Sumter, SC 29154.
