Maggie Scarborough Copeland was born on April 23, 1917, in Lee County, a daughter of the late Lela and Warren Scarborough. She was married to the late Harry Copeland Jr. Mrs. Copeland departed this life on Monday, Jan. 29, 2018, at her home.
At an early age, she joined New Zion AME Church in Wisacky. She attended the public schools of Lee County. She was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, baking, working in her flower yard and sewing. She would sometimes make her own clothes, as she was a very impressive dresser, even into her golden years. "Sista," as she was affectionately known, loved her family; her family was the joy of her life. She also loved the Lord and enjoyed singing old familiar hymns. Last year, she celebrated her 100th birthday and was recognized on WLTX News 19.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories: a loving and devoted daughter of the home, Dora (James) Parrott; a loving son, John (Marie) Scarborough of Sumter; three stepchildren. Anna Copeland of Sumter, Bertha Mabry of Baltimore and Ruth Ann (Alonzo) Hampton of Mayesville; one niece, Lucille Damon of Mayesville; one nephew, Samuel (Christina) Cole of Sumter; 28 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; 21 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Copeland Sr.; four stepchildren, Mattie Jones, Cornelius Dantzler, Harry Copeland Jr. and Nathaniel Copeland; four grandchildren, Harry L. Gaymon Jr., Randy Gaymon, Gloria Jean Gaymon and Darrell L. Parrott; and two great-grandchildren, Corey Henry and Javon Gaymon.
