A 50-year-old Sumter man has been charged with attempted murder after he reportedly stabbed a woman for intervening in an argument in the presence of children.

The woman Herman George Coubarous is accused of attacking was transported to Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital with injuries on June 8, according to Adrienne Sarvis, public information officer for Sumter County Sheriff's Office. Coubarous remained at Sumter County Sheriff's Office Detention Center as of the morning of June 11 with a $30,000 total bond. A magistrate judge set a $25,000 surety bond for the attempted murder charge and a $5,000 surety bond for the possession of a weapon during a violent crime charge.

A warrant issued on June 8 states the suspect chased the victim while verbally threatening to kill her after she intervened in an argument between the suspect and the victim's sister at a home on Bowen Court.

Coubarous is accused of later using a "blade tool" to stab and cut the woman on the hands and left arm after she fell to the ground.

Minors were present during the incident.

Other than a dozen traffic violations that resulted in fines between 2000 and 2017, it appears Coubarous has no criminal history in Sumter County, according to public index records.
