GREENVILLE (AP) — A man who was driving under the influence of drugs when he crashed a van killing four children in South Carolina has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.
Arnez Yaron Jamison, 29, agreed to plead guilty Tuesday to four counts of reckless homicide in exchange for the 20-year sentence, The Greenville New s reported.
Jamison had a prescription anxiety medicine and marijuana in his system in December 2018 when he drove his van off state Highway 253 and crashed into trees, troopers said. Witnesses said the van was swerving and speeding before the crash that happened just after midnight.
Jamire Halley, 8; Robbiana Evans; 6, Arnez Jamison Jr., 4; and Ar'mani Jamison, 2 were all killed. There were no child seats in the van, authorities said.
Jamison was driving the four children back to their mother's home after they spent time with his children from a different relationship, investigators said.
"I stayed behind wrapping Christmas gifts never knowing my children would not return home," said Jacqueline Brown, the mother of the children. "Him like myself will have to live with the pain he caused for the rest of his life."
Jamison wiped away tears as his girlfriend spoke about her dead children, but did not speak during Tuesday's hearing.
