Man gets life for killing girlfriend after breakup

SPARTANBURG (AP) - A 46-year-old man has been sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison after killing his girlfriend when she broke up with him.

Solicitor Barry Barnette says Derrick Burnside had two previous convictions for domestic violence before he went looking for 35-year-old Latonya Richards.

Barnette says Richards had told Burnside a few days before she was breaking up with him.

Barnette says a security camera showed the two arguing in a Wellford business in July 2018, then Burnside shooting Richards once.

The prosecutor said in a statement Richards ran to a SUV outside the business and Burnside shot her again.

Burnside pleaded guilty to murder on Wednesday. His life sentence is without parole.
