Manning Mayor Julia Nelson appears to be retaining her seat as the city’s leader after Tuesday’s election.

According to unofficial totals, Nelson earned 632 votes, while her challenger, LaNette Samuels-Cooper, garnered 193 votes.

"I’m most appreciative for the vote of confidence, which our citizens have expressed. Our voter turnout was lower than normal. However, when you consider current challenges with COVID-19, which postponed our election from April 7, it’s within reason to have a low number of citizens participating. Now that the political process is over, we can roll up our sleeves and continue working to ameliorate our city," Nelson said.

A city council seat was also up for election, in which incumbent Sherry Welle won with 95 votes against challenger John Weeks’ 62 votes.

All three Summerton Town Council incumbents lost tonight after no one filed to run, leaving it to write-in only.

Terrance Tidal received 149 votes, Regina Brown earned 144 votes, and Kathleen Gibson got 131 votes.

In the Town of Turbeville, Tammy Hicks won with 38 votes over Marion Dukes, who received 13 votes.
