MARTHA BELLE B. PORTER

Martha Belle Brothers Porter, 93, was called by God to be with him on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, at Sumter West Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Born on Sept. 8, 1925, in St. George, Dorchester County, she was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Brothers. She was a graduate of Williams Memorial High School and furthered her education at Morris College. She taught school in Lee County and also worked at Campbell Soup. As a youth, she joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, St. George. She was also a member of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church and later joined Antioch United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Eastern Star House of Ruth. Martha was united in holy matrimony to the late John Thomas Porter Sr. on Sept. 5, 1948. This marriage was blessed with six children.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her children, Jacquelyn Nathenia "Jackie" Porter, John Thomas (Jean) Porter Jr., Karen Sylyn Griffin, Errol Lyle Porter, Selwyn DeChon (Tammy) Porter and Patrice Katourah (Robert) Jemes; her twin sister, Mary Nelle Brothers Walker Garvin; two sisters-in-law; 13 grandchildren; one granddaughter-in-law; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-grandsons-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

The family will receive relatives and friends starting at 3 p.m. at the home, 255 Arlington Road, Sumter.

Homegoing services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at Antioch United Methodist Church, 4040 Dubose Siding Road, Sumter, with the Rev. Raymond F. Cook Jr., pastor, eulogist.

A wake service will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. today at the John Wesley Williams Sr. Memorial Chapel of Williams Funeral Home Inc., 821 N. Main St., Sumter.

The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

The funeral procession will leave at 10:20 a.m. from the home.

Burial will be at Antioch United Methodist Church Cemetery.
