Martha Lee Givens, 79, departed her earthly journey on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, at her home. Born on March 27, 1942, in Sumter County, she was a daughter of the late Marshall and Esabella Lonon Capers. Ms. Martha, or Mother Givens, as she was affectionately known by her community and church family, was a member of Crossroad Christian Fellowship Ministry. She attended the public schools of Sumter County. Additionally, Mother Givens held the positions of childcare provider for 20 years and private duty nurse for 26 years. She was a pillar of her community and acting mother to many besides her own. She expressed her love for family and friends through her cooking, visits and phone conversations.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: two brothers, Isaac Capers (Eloise) of New Windsor, New York, and Earl Capers of Baltimore, Maryland; two sons, Levelton Givens of Goose Creek and Raymond Givens of Sumter; two daughters, Diane Givens and Tammy Benbow of Sumter; and adopted granddaughter, Stacy Givens of Sumter; best friends, Apostle Allean Spellman, Ada Wright and Emma Jean Lonon; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In accordance with the COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting that face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 18 Oakview Drive, Sumter.

Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Evergreen Memorial Park, 802 N. Guignard Drive, Sumter, with Apostle Sylvester Francis officiating.

The procession will leave from the home at 2 p.m.
