MARY CAPERS SPANN

Mary Capers Spann, 65, was born on Sept. 15, 1955, in Pinewood, to the late Allen and Epsie Stukes Capers. She passed peacefully from this life on the afternoon of Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence.

Mary was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1975 graduate of Furman High School, Sumter. She worked in the textile industry for several years before her employment at Vaughn Bassett Williams Furniture in Sumter, where she would retire after working for more than 20 years. Early in her youth, she joined Calvary Baptist Church.

Mary leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Harry Lee Spann; mother-in-law, Luphyllis (Samuel) Spann of Sumter; two sisters, Anna Dudley of Decatur, Georgia, and Betty Capers of Sumter; three brothers, Willie (Rosa) Capers of Pinewood, James Caper and John Capers of Sumter; one uncle, Esau McCleod of White Plains, New York; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Stacey Spann; son, Eric Spann; one sister, Rosetta Rowe; and one brother, Robert Capers.

In accordance with COVID-19 guidelines, the family is requesting face masks and social distancing be observed by relatives and friends during visitation at the home, 565 S. Sumter St., Sumter.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at Calvary Baptist Churchyard Cemetery, 10075 Sammy Swamp Road, Pinewood, with the Rev. E.L. Sanders officiating.

The procession will leave at 1:20 p.m. from the home.
