MARY M. MCELVEEN

Mary M. McElveen, 73, passed away at NHC Healthcare, after a long battle with the mean and nasty disease called dementia. She was surrounded by her daughters, and her husband was holding her hand as she peacefully met her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ just after sunset on Wednesday, Nov. 24, 2021.

Mary was the wife of Johnny McElveen for 52 years and the mother to three daughters, Cyndi Rodgers, Sarah Euten and Nancy Lindsay.

Born on Sept. 29, 1948, in Lee County, she was a daughter of the late Hazel and Lucille Brown. Mary was a member of Bethesda Church of God for more than 40 years. She loved her church and was proud to tell everyone about it. She especially loved the Voices of Praise Choir. You could find her on the right side of the congregation, third row, third seat during any service. She was excited to volunteer in the nursery and food pantry, until her health failed her. Mary was a devoted homemaker for most of her life and then, in later years, worked for The Item. She was a 1968 graduate of Edmunds High School. "Momma" looked forward to going to the Gospel Music Barn on Thursday nights for gospel singing. She also enjoyed reading, watching Westerns, Andy Griffith and NASCAR Racing. Jimmy Johnson was her absolute favorite driver.

Left to cherish her memories are a sister, Joanne Martin; two brothers, David Brown and Donnie Brown; three sons-in-law, Frankie Rodgers, James Euten and Michael Lindsay; six grandchildren, Bryan McElveen, Zachary Rodgers, Allison Euten, Canyon Lindsay, Olivia Lindsay and Tillman Lindsay; two great-grandsons, Jackson McElveen and Kellen Rodgers; a brother-in-law, Ray McElveen; a special friend who became family, Pam Meyer; an Earthly angel, Pauline Russell; many nieces, nephews and friends.

The family would like to say, "Thank you!" to all the beautiful care angels who have loved and cared for "momma" through her battle, Serenity Keepers Home Care, NHC Healthcare and Amedisys Hospice.

A worship service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday at Bethesda Church of God, 2730 Broad St., Sumter, with the Rev. Al Sims and Regina Owens officiating.
