Matthew Esene Odibo Sr., 69, husband of Theodosia Zeigler Odibo, departed this life on Jan. 20, 2018, in Houston.
He was born on Dec. 18, 1948, in Lagos, Nigeria, a son of the late Thomas and Aduke Odibo. Matthew obtained his formal education from the public schools in Lagos and later moved to Canada, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in digital electronics from Sir-Sanford Fleming College in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. He retired from Houston Federal Reserve. He started his life walk with Christ at an early age at St. Domonics Catholic Church, Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa. Matthew was united in holy matrimony to Theodosia Zeigler in 1974. To this union, they were blessed with four children.
He leaves to cherish his precious memories: a devoted wife, Theodosia Z. Odibo; four sons, Major Otazeria B. (Dana) Odibo, Justin (Jamara) Odibo, Melvin O. (Orelia) Odibo and Matthew E. Odibo II; one daughter, Kristain E. Odibo; two brothers, Joseph (Cecelia) Odibo and Michael Odibo; eight grandchildren, Naomi, Hope, Morgan, Justin Jr., Kaiden, Melvin Jr., Mason and Keoni Odibo; seven sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary E.; and a son, Vista E. Odibo.
Public viewing will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Job's Mortuary.
Mr. Odibo will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. on Friday for viewing until the hour of service.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at Salem Chapel & Heritage Center, 101 S. Salem Ave., Sumter, with the Rev. Clifford Gaymon officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park in Sumter.
The family will receive friends at 1150 Vintage Drive, Sumter, SC 29154.
