MATTIE L. HASTIE-COLLINS

Posted

Mattie L. Hastie-Collins, wife of Roosevelt Collins, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, after an extended illness.

Born Sept. 27, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Marion and Sudie Ford-Hastie. Mattie attended the public schools of Sumter County. At an early age, she accepted the Lord as her personal Savior and joined New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church and became a lifelong member. Mattie worked in various capacities in the church, which included: Sunday school teacher, president of missionary circle number one, vice president of the usher board, volunteer mentor for the after school HYPE Program and a key person in implementing the clothes giveaway ministry. She was employed by Carolina Furniture Works until she retired. Mattie also worked for Polar Bear Cleaners for a number of years before a second retirement. Her most valuable role in life was that of being a mother. She was truly beautiful inside and out and nothing was more important to her than her children. She was an angel among us.

She leaves to cherish her memories: her husband, Roosevelt Collins of the home; five devoted children, Susan Brown of Columbia, Deloris (Thomas) DeVaughan of Sumter, Roosevelt L. Collins of Sumter, Larry (Diane) Collins of Columbia and Sharon (Marvin) Felder of Sumter; seven grandchildren, Angela Brown of Rock Hill, Jessica Chambers of Florence, Keairra Felder of Camden, Shekkia Collins of Denmark, Kedreana Felder of Sumter, Marquis Felder of Sumter and Larry A. Collins Jr. of Columbia; three sisters, Catherine (James) Green, Gardenia Knox and Viola Amos of Sumter; a niece raised as a sister, Francis (Gus) Moss of Columbia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Susie Mae Russell; and three brothers, Timothy Hastie, Eugene Hastie and Willie Hastie.

Public viewing will be from 1:30 to 7 p.m.

The family will receive guests at the home, 14 Oak View Drive.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie A. Wright Jr. officiating, assisted by the Rev. Clifton Gaymon and the Rev. Hazel Charles.

The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m.

Sumter Funeral Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements.
