Mayor McElveen declares Aug. 7 as Purple Heart Day

Sumter Mayor Joseph McElveen signed a proclamation declaring Wednesday, Aug. 7, as Purple Heart Day in the City of Sumter. The proclamation honored military veterans of the Purple Heart, a U.S. military decoration awarded to military members who have been wounded or killed while serving in combat against enemy forces. Gen. George Mabry Jr. Chapter 817 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart was founded in 2011 and consists of 37 Purple Heart recipients from Sumter and nearby communities. The chapter meets at 529 N. Wise Drive on the third Thursday of each month.
