Mitchell Collins, age 73, died on Sunday, May 22, 2022, at his residence.
Born in Mullins, he was a son of the late Coy and Mary Winford Martin Collins. Mitchell graduated from Furman High School and then joined the U.S. Air Force. He served for four years and then went to the University of South Carolina, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. After graduating, he went to work for Westinghouse in Sumter. Westinghouse later became the Eaton Corp. Mitchell worked for Eaton for more than 30 years as a computer systems manager. He loved to play golf and enjoyed traveling, especially to the beach. He will be remembered as a very loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by two daughters, Heidi Nichole Coursey and her husband, Billy, and Heather Maree Collins, both of Sumter; a brother, Charles Collins and his wife, Starr, of Columbia; a sister, Ann Lighthill of Sumter; four grandchildren, Jodi O’Conner and her husband, Josh, Dalton Coursey, Bates McCutchen and Holdyn Coursey; two great-grandchildren, Owen O’Conner and Talan O’Conner; and a special friend, Jackie Barr of Sumter.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sumter United Ministries, 36 S. Artillery Drive, Sumter, SC 29150.
The family wishes to express a special thank you to Dr. James Smith of McLeod Health Oncology, Dr. Alton Jordan and Homestead Hospice for all their loving and compassionate care.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday at Sumter Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bates McCutchen, Billy Coursey, Charles Collins and Dalton Coursey.
