NANCY GIBSON TIMMERMAN

Posted

Nancy Gibson Timmerman, 89, wife of the late H. Shelden Timmerman, died peacefully on Friday, May 7, 2021, after a brief stay at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.

Nancy, a force of energy and full of personality, was fittingly born on New Year's Eve 1931, to Inez Zeigler Gibson and John Cecil Gibson of Denmark. Better known as "Honey" to those closest to her, Nancy was famous for her quick feet on the dance floor and quick moves during card games. With a laugh that would light up the room more than her gold-sequined shoes ever could, Nancy never met a stranger who didn't appreciate her wit. She had a soft spot for family and friends and a passion for art, traveling the world and all things frog-related.

Nancy attended Winthrop University and, after marriage, devoted her life to her family as a homemaker, mother and chaperone for her children's group outings and trips. Once her children were in their teens, Nancy served as an orthodontic assistant for Warren K. Smith, orthodontist, where she enjoyed a long career with treasured coworkers. After retiring, Nancy still didn't slow down, becoming more active in community activities: teacher at the Shepherd's Center, docent at the Sumter Art Gallery, sandwich-maker for the homeless and card player with anyone who was willing to shuffle. In addition, she was an active and longtime member of the Church of the Holy Comforter.

Nancy was a devoted wife and loving mother to two children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. She is survived by her son, H. Shelden Timmerman Jr. (wife, Christie) of Greenville; daughter, Lesa Timmerman Chandler (husband, Dale) of Central; sister-in-law, Dianne Gibson of Montgomery, Alabama; grandchildren, Kristin Timmerman Thackston and Lindsay Timmerman Niedringhaus (husband, Steven) of Greenville; great-grandchildren, Henry and Charlie Niedringhaus and Tatum Timmerman; numerous special nieces and nephews; and partner-in-crime and cousin, Patricia Boozer.

Nancy was predeceased by her husband, H. Shelden Timmerman; one sister, Catherine G. Pierce; and two brothers, G. Oswald Gibson and James C. Gibson.

The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Charles Butler, oncologist, and the Kershaw Health Oncology staff who provided dedicated care for many years.

A celebration of life service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19, at the Church of the Holy Comforter, followed by interment in the prayer garden.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Sumter Gallery of Art, P.O. Box 1316, Sumter, SC, 29151.
