Earl Wilson, franchisee and operator of the Arby's at 1280 Broad St., discussed the opening of a second franchise on Tuesday. Wilson is also franchisee and operator of the three KFC fast-food eateries in Sumter.
Wilson said the new Arby's - at 1954 McCrays Mill Road, across the street from Leo's Wings - is planned to open in "early summer." Work has just begun on the site, and once construction is further along in the spring, Wilson said he will have a more precise date for the opening.
The new establishment will be the same size and have the same seating capacity as the current Arby's at Broad Street and Alice Drive, but it will feature the newest footprint - or building design - that Arby's is using.
"It will be same size but will look different, especially on the inside," Wilson said.
Given the success of the original restaurant on Broad Street, Wilson said Arby's corporate officials came in, did a population demographics study of Sumter and recommended adding another location at the new site on McCrays Mill.
Wilson said the commitments made by other businesses in the area and population growth in that section of town with new homes and apartments helped in the decision.
"McDonald's on the corner of McCrays Mill made a commitment to rebuild, Walmart Neighborhood Market committed to build, and with Sumter High School there and just residential growth over in the area, it made sense," Wilson said.
April will mark the 30-year anniversary of the Arby's on the corner of Alice Drive and Broad Street, Wilson said. It opened in April 1988.
A Sumter resident, Wilson is originally from Florence, where he said he has three Arby's restaurants and three KFCs.
