Number of high seeds fall at Sumter Pink Open


It was not a good day to be a high seed in the Sumter Pink Open on Tuesday, whether in the first round of the singles main draw or in the final round of the singles qualifying draw.

Two of the three seeded players who played in the main draw lost and the higher seeds who played lower seeds in four of the eight final qualifying matches lost as well in the $25,000 USTA Women's Pro Circuit event at Palmetto Tennis Center.

In the main draw, fourth seed Victoria Rodriguez, Jovana Jaksic, Marta Paigina and McCartney Kessler were winners.

Rodriguez defeated Ronit Yurovsky 7-5, 6-0; Jaksic topped No. 5 seed Fanni Stollar 7-5, 6-1; Paigina moved on with a 7-5, 2-1, retired win over sixth-seed Amra Sadikovic; and Kessler was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Sofia Sewing.

In the final qualifying round, No. 13 seed Emily Appleton beat No. 1 seed Caitlin Whoriskey to advance to the main draw. No. 12 seed Jessica Pegula upset No. 2 seed Zuzana Zlochova 4-6, 6-2, 6-1; No. 15 seed Victoria Flores beat seventh-seeded Kennedy Shaffer 6-4, 6-4; and ninth seed Erin Routliffe beat No. 8 seed Anastasia Nefedova 6-3, 7-5.

The other qualifiers to advance to the main draw were No. 5 seed Anna Tatishvili, fourth seed Marcela Zacarias, sixth seed Ida Jarlskog and third seed Nathaly Kurata.

Play continues today at 9 a.m. he tournament concludes on Sunday.
