Opinion: Legal gun owners should support rights Nov. 16

Posted

Almost daily we hear the negative rhetoric from politicians, media and celebrities against gun owners and the Second Amendment. Talking about confiscating certain firearms or passing more laws seems to be the popular narrative these days. As gun owners, we need to come together to show we are not like the evil idiots who commit mass shootings and other crimes. So I propose on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2019, as legal gun owners, we each do something to show our support for the Second Amendment. Around the country if each of us in the towns we live in, individually or in groups, do a positive activity related to gun ownership, we can make a difference.

There are numerous things you can do, for example: Go hunting or visit a shooting range and target practice. Teach a teen or non-gun owner how to shoot and gun safety. If, by law, you are allowed to carry a gun, either openly or concealed, do so. Buy a new gun, bullets or shooting supplies to show support for local businesses who sell them and manufacturers who make them.

Be a Second Amendment activist. Write a letter to the editor of your local paper or call in to a local radio show supporting the Second Amendment, or share a good memory you have related to shooting sports. Have a discussion (non-confrontational) with someone who does not believe in the Second Amendment or why Red Flag Laws or any type of firearm confiscation is wrong.

If you own a business that sells firearms, ammo or hunting/shooting accessories, offer some kind of sale or special. If you own a shooting range, have an event that day and offer discounted range fees.

I have started a page on Facebook for this event, which can be found at Nationwide Pro 2A Day. My goal is to get as many people as possible involved and have you post on social media, the day of the event, the activities you participated in.
