Opinion: Why isn't law enforcement helping to reduce traffic deaths in Sumter County?

Posted

In reference to the recent article in The Sumter Item about increased traffic deaths in Sumter, while the state overall showed a decrease in traffic deaths. In my opinion, the cause is very clear: a total lack of traffic law enforcement in Sumter County.

I have seen people routinely going 15-30 mph over the posted speed limit. It is particularly noticeable on McCrays Mill Road, Guignard Drive, Bultman Drive, Kolb Road, Liberty Street and Broad Street. People going as much as 60 in a 35 mph zone, routinely ignoring traffic signals, weaving through traffic just as fast as possible and generally being a hazard to everyone else on the road. I have personally seen fully loaded logging trucks running over 60 mph on McCrays Mill. Our local "law enforcement officers" simply don't ... until there is an accident. Why are they not doing their jobs?
