SUMMERVILLE – The Sumter P-15’s missed out on a chance to close out American Legion baseball third-round state playoffs series against Goose Creek Post 166 on Thursday, falling 9-5 at Cane Bay High School’s Cobra Park.

Sumter now leads the best-of-5 series 2-1. Game 4 will be played on Friday at Riley Park beginning at 7 p.m.
Sumter, which fell to 23-9 on the season, fell behind 1-0 in the first inning. It scored twice in the third inning to take its only lead at 2-1. It was short-lived though as Goose Creek, which improved to 14-9, scored four times in the bottom of the third to go up 5-2.
The P-15’s scored twice in the fifth to cut the lead to 5-4, but Post 166 scored four times in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-4.
Sumter finished with eight hits, three of them coming from Chandler Hunter. One of those was a double, and Hunter scored three runs and stole two bases.
Tray Yates had two hits, including a double. Trent Frye had a hit and drove in three runs, while Drake Thames had a hit and an RBI. SB DuCom had a hit and a run.
In the other third-round series on Thursday, Florence took a 2-1 lead over Camden with a 10-5 triumph, while Greer wrapped up its series with Greenwood with a 6-1 win in Game 4.
Greer advances to next week’s state tournament along with Fort Mill. Fort Mill completed a sweep of Gaffney on Wednesday to advance.
