Palmetto Gas wants to help customers add life to their outdoors

Relocated retailer offers 'one-stop shopping'

With the opening of the second phase of its business earlier this month, Palmetto Gas wants to help area residents "make your outdoor area your favorite room in your house."

Founded in 1962, Palmetto Gas initially was primarily a retail propane gas supplier on Lafayette Drive. Now, after relocating to 820 S. Pike, the business has become Sumter and the area's only one-stop shop for natural gas and propane gas appliances, according to CEO Andrew Smith. The full-service propane company recently opened a new outdoor living center.

He calls it "now offering non-stop shopping for your gas, your appliances, installation and service."

The new outdoor living center in the front of the retail business allows customers to experience the outdoors year-round, he said, with the sale of Bromic infrared heaters, fireplaces of all makes and styles and fire pits.

High-quality gas lanterns, outdoor furniture and outdoor kitchens to include outdoor grills are also available.

The furniture is a Bob Timberlake brand and includes bent-back gliders and rockers and patio sets made from heavy-duty, recyclable plastic and has a 50-year warranty, said Emily Ward, marketing consultant.

Smith said Saber outdoor grills are made from the highest grade stainless steel and offer true zonal cooking and eliminate flare-ups. They are also "live-burn" and are ready to showcase.

"To see how the Saber grill works," he said, "we offer customers to bring your hamburger, your hotdog, your steak up here, and we'll be glad to let you use our grill and cook it."

Product delivery is also free in the local area, he said.

Both Smith and Ward estimate customers will pay about one-third more for appliances and furniture at Palmetto Gas, but it's designed to last.

"Basically, our motto here for the outdoor living center is 'buy your last grill, furniture or fireplace first at Palmetto Gas,'" Smith said. "Because when you buy it here, it's going to last you a lifetime."

He said the retailer's price-points are better than area customers could find at similar stores in larger cities such as Columbia or Charleston.

Palmetto Gas also still offers a propane filling station at the store. To fill a 20-pound cylinder, it costs $8, Smith said.

"We can offer truly one-stop shopping," Smith said. "We can sell these gas heaters and fireplaces, and we can install them. We can sell you the gas after the fact. You don't have to go anywhere but right here."
