FROM STAFF REPORTS

For parents struggling to teach history to their children at home because of COVID-19, the S.C. Historical Society Museum is here to help.

The museum has developed free, hands-on activities and lessons spanning all of South Carolina from the "Upcountry" (now the Upstate) to the Midlands to the Lowcountry. As the only museum in South Carolina to showcase the history of the entire state, the lessons will span all of South Carolina.

All content is developed by teachers and publishes weekly on the museum's Facebook, Instagram and the SCHS from Home website, https://schseducation.org/resources/.

Each week will have a different theme pertaining to the state's history. Topics will include:

- Carolina Foodways: Learn about the history of food, agriculture and farming in S.C., with hands-on activities such as making butter the way Colonial ancestors did using ingredients already in your kitchen. There are also videos, coloring pages, historic recipes to try at home, and more.

- The Life of a Colonial Sailor: Explore the lives of Colonial sailors who landed in Charleston 350 years ago. There's a printable maze and crossword puzzles, as well as fun experiments to try in the back yard.

And in the coming weeks:

- Communication throughout S.C. history: How did people communicate in Colonial S.C.? Learn about writing with quills, check out 100-year-old letters from our ancestors, and write your own letter to send to relatives.

- Arts and Culture: Learn more about famous S.C. artists like watercolor painter Alice Ravenel Huger Smith, and create your own artwork at home.

- And you can search #MuseumFromHome on social media to find more activities from museums around the world.
