PATRICIA JEAN POGUE

Posted

Patricia Jean Pogue was born on Sept. 20, 1930, in Newark, New Jersey, to the late Naomi Buckner and Joseph Jefferson but was raised in Sumter with her grandfather, Marion Buckner, while her mother worked in New Jersey. On Saturday, Oct. 26, 2019, Patricia transitioned to her heavenly house to be with the Lord.

Jean was educated in the Sumter school system and attended Lincoln High School. She met Osteen Johnson Jr. and married immediately right out of school. The couple then moved to Newark to start their lives; this union lasted 17 years, to which three children were born, Osteen III, Andrea and Ronald.

In Oct. 1966, she met and married Beaufort Pogue; they lived in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Upon retirement, they returned home to Sumter, becoming members of St. Luke AME Church on St. Paul Church Road.

Jean spent her early years working in the garment industry as a talented seamstress and tailor. She retired from Citibank in Cheyenne, where she worked as a supervisor. Jean was a founding member of a social group, the Golden Links. She was also a longtime member and held a board position with the Sumterites.

Jean leaves to celebrate her life and cherish precious memory: her children, Osteen III (Kathleen), Andrea and Ronald Johnson, Deatre Speights and Beaufort (Patricia) Pogue III; her grandchildren, Terreke Johnson, Lavel Thomas, Dr. Frederick D. (Latrel, Esq.) Johnson, Ronald Brashard (Charleen) Johnson, Olisa Rachele Johnson and Winston Speed; 17 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Jean was preceded in death by her only sibling, Ethel Mike.
